The biggest box office success to start 2018 has been the Jumanji reboot. Directed by Jake Kasdan, the film stars Kevin Hart, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black, who play children trapped in adult bodies in a fantasy world inspired by a video game. It ended the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend with over $34 million in ticket sales at 3,849 locations and scored its second number-one weekend at the box office. The Post and The Commuter finished second and third in sales for the weekend with respective ticket sales totaling $22.2 million and $16 million.
Since being released, Jumanji has accumulated box office sales of $289 million, which makes it the highest-grossing Christmas week film of all-time in North America ahead of Sing ($270 million) and Meet the Fockers ($279 million). If the film tops the $304 million earned by Skyfall in 2012, it will be Sony's best-performing domestic film that isn't part of the Spider-Man franchise.
